The Gifts Photo Exhibition

It’s a monumental cause that will occur in a successive number of months. Five photographers, gifted with naturally exceptional talents in the field of photography and digital arts, have come together to give back their blessings by staging an exhibit of their works and creations.

Benefiting charitable causes like the Palcare, the Abandoned Elderly & Unwed Mothers of the Sanctuary of St. Philomena and the Philam Catholic Community, the exhibition will run from March 28 to April 18 at the Philam Life Building in Manila.

It will feature the works and talents of Parc Cruz, Med Ferrer, Edwin Loyola, Borj Meneses and JP Sarmenta. And after which, these five laudable artists will hold scheduled solo exhibits in the same venue.

CRUZ

Solo exhibit schedule: May 19th to June 2nd

Parc Cruz is most recognized for his work in portraits and conceptual photography. A self-confessed maverick who serves as an inspiration to others with his avant-garde ideas, Cruz defies boundaries and conformities to bring out what he wants in his photographs, capturing and creating awe-inspiring, dramatic and emotive images. Many of his works appear personal and ingrained, identifiable by his own distinctive style. In creating his photographs, Cruz intends to challenge a person to think and let his own mind wander.

FERRER

Solo exhibit schedule: July 2nd July 23rd

A perceptive eye for composition, color, value and textural relationships is what makes Med Ferrer a truly gifted photographer. Combining technical perfection and intuitiveness, his images capture a sense of time and place that truly represents his unique vision of the world. His collection of still life images is thoughtfully elegant in their simplicity with classical balance and contemporary abstract relationships. Of his portraits are reflections of the essence of human dignity and culture. Utilizing a unique point of view, Ferrer has the ability to create dynamic movement from a static and at times monumental subject. The contrast between human and environmental scale is often maximized.

LOYOLA

Solo exhibit schedule: Dec 7th to Dec 31st

Multi-awarded photographer Edwin Loyola is hailed as the “Dark Artist” for his penchant for dark tones. A veteran at staging exhibitions, Loyola is self-taught and embodies what passion for the craft involves --- by relying on instincts to create a work of art. The range and dimension to which he expresses his creativity is evident in his portfolio, where one will find a spectrum of ordinary elements turned into extra-ordinary images. Loyola is a proponent and a staunch advocate of giving back what God has provided, using his talents to create art, whose main beneficiaries are the charities he supports.

MENESES

Solo exhibit schedule: Oct 1st to Oct 24th

Dennis Borja Meneses is indeed a disciple of the craft. Pushing himself to learn the technical aspect of photography, Meneses is a proficient glamour, fashion, portrait and conceptual artist. But more than that, he weaves special images that aim to reflect social relevance and make a statement, while sometimes infusing his artistry with graphic designs. Meneses is a believer of the freedom of expression and original ideas, saying that art may be imitated but it should never limit one to strive and create better photos.

SARMENTA

Solo exhibit schedule: Aug 14th to Sept 15th

John Paul Sarmenta is a visual artist who prides himself in sharing his thoughts and ideas to everyone through his photographs. From the realm of nature, portraits and surreal conceptual arts he has shared his idealist visions to everyone in hope to make a difference. Though he may be young in years and often categorized as a rebel with his peers, his differences in his philosophies allowed him to build his individuality from the rest, an illusive reverie that exist in our everyday lives.

"The Whistle of Boatmen" is the first collection of free verses by Santos Castillo, a Roman Catholic priest in suburban Chicago. The book explores the human condition as an encounter with people, little things, divine realities, and seasons, and speaks of the vicissitudes of human life, especially to experiences of departures. The preface also a phenomenology of the poetic experience. The poetic subjects are diverse, all products of individual encounters and reflections with the most mundane things to the most profound realities of life. It also paints some images of the background of the author, who is born and raised in the Philippines and has become a diocesan missionary to America.

Washington Coalition for School Libraries & Information Technology

OUR VISION

The Washington Coalition for School Libraries and Information Technology (WCSLit) envisions a future where every public school in Washington state is served by a full-time, certified teacher-librarian who manages a fully-funded library and technology resource collection. The coalition looks to a future where students from across the state have the same access to technology, the same chance for literacy, and the same opportunity to receive a world-class education. It is our hope that Washington state standards for library and information technology education become the benchmark for library and information technology instruction across the nation.

OUR MISSION

The Washington Coalition for School Libraries and Information Technology is a group of concerned citizens, educators, businesses, and community groups working to ensure that school libraries receive adequate and sustained funding for full-time certified teacher-librarians, materials, technologies and facilities.

Coalition members believe that Washington's public schools must graduate students who are information-literate, technologically savvy, and impassioned skillful readers. To achieve this goal and to fulfill our aspirations of providing a world-class education for our children, schools must have well-funded, well-staffed libraries. Our primary mission is to advocate for this.
WHO WE ARE

The coalition was started by a group of parents whose children attend school in a district that recently made the third cut in four years to library programs.

We were dismayed to learn that similar cuts were occurring around Washington state and around the country. The American Library Association describes this national trend in no uncertain terms: the school librarian is highly endangered.

We were moved to form the coalition in order to provide a channel of communication for Washington citizens to deliver a clear message to our leaders: Washington voters believe librarians and information technology are fundamental to 21st century education and beyond.

We were quickly joined by other citizens – teachers, community and business leaders, and members of the higher education community – who wanted to take action to stop the devaluation of library programs and seek progressive policy changes that accurately reflect the needs of Washington students and our state and local economies.

Hi Edwin-
What a small world it is!! I found my way to your photography from a stock photo site. It has been fun to see what an incredible artist you are and how sweeping your subjects turned out to be.

I am a Mom living in Washington state near Canada (Spokane). I wanted to ask your permission to use a silhouette of your work. We originally just wanted to use it on our website in a silhouetted form which seemed ok with the rights agreement. But, I'm writing to you now to ask your permission to put the silhouetted form on a t-shirt. The money will go to help try to get money for school libraries, it is not to make money.

Please take a look at our website to understand what we are doing. fundourfuturewashington.org
I hope to hear from you soon and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

Here are the pictures:
We would use the top silhouette image on t-shirts for the Washington Coalition for School Libraries and Information Technology,
we are a group of Mom's that started it and a non-profit! Thanks Edwin. If you say yes, we would love to post your website on ours and tell the story how WA and the Philippines connected for kids!

THANK YOU

for everyone

http://hernandezrick.multiply.com/journal/item/2/PunisherRano_Shoots...

PunisherRano shoots 20 questions...

A peek at the lighter side of serious (?) people.

At para sa pinaka unang pagtatampok... presenting the dashing... mindboggling... hair raising... cute... Mr. Edwin Loyola!!!!!!

PR: Maiba tayo. Marami kang nakapost na photos sa multiply mo, partikular ang still lifes na mukhang paborito mo, sa tingin mo ano sa tagalog ang still life?
EL: Teka still life ba paborito ko! akala mo lang yon! dahil di ko maisip ang still life sa tagalog, "People" na lang paborito ko..sa tagalog..."Tao" di ba simple lang, at bakit ko naman, pahihirapan ang sarili ko isipin ang bagay na hindi mo rin alam! hmmmm, STILL LIFE?
teka..baka pwedeng .."Ay Buhay Pala", "BUHAY PA RIN?" or "May Buhay Din? a ewan!
hahahahaha. teka kape muna ako...

PR: Ang tagalog ng 'still life' ay 'Istil layp' ok.

PR: Medyo lumamig ata... anyway...

PR: Wala ka bang kaaway sa kanila? Lahat sila bati mo?

(see fig. 1 above)

Pulitiko kaya?

- first class citizen lahat ang artist!

PR: ... shoot to kill.... di pa ko tapos kasi...

PR: O nga, nasa lente nga pala yun...

EL: Huwag mo na silang ipa salvage.. malay mo i donate nila yon gamit nila after a few months (you wish!

EL: sige na nga...palagi ko sinasabi ko... get out of the box! mag experiment / mag break ng rules.. AND CREATE YOUR OWN STYLE!!!

No need for lengthy debates--it is a universally accepted fact that the Philippine Madrigal Singers is one of the world’s best choirs after having consistently won all the top prizes in the world’s prestigious choral competitions for the last 42 years.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers (affectionately known as the “Madz”) was founded in 1963 by National Artist for Music, Professor Andrea O. Veneracion. The Madz is mostly composed of students, faculty and alumni from the University of the Philippines. The group’s trademark performance stance, singing in a semi-circle without a conductor, is instantly recognizable. A standard Madz performance clearly exhibits the seamless fusion of their musical virtuosity, technical proficiency and soulful singing. Their highly eclectic repertoire spans the breadth and length of vocal music: from Renaissance madrigals to the avant-garde, from Filipino and international folksongs to the latest pop hits, even from the most cerebral choral masterpieces to the most humorous of novelty numbers. This world-class choir can honestly sing anything with authenticity and professionalism while keeping their audience thoroughly entertained.

The group’s initial foray into the international scene took place in 1969 at the First Choruses of the World Festival held at the Lincoln Center in New York City with a critically-acclaimed performance that marked the beginning of a distinguished and illustrious musical legacy. To date, the Madz has consistently won top prizes in the most prestigious choral competitions held at Spittal, Austria; Arezzo and Gorizia in Italy; Neuchatel, Switzerland; Debrecen, Hungary; Varna, Bulgaria; Tolosa, Spain and Marktoberdorf, Germany. It was in June of 1997 when the Madz sealed their stature as the World’s Best Choir when they bagged the grand prize at the ultimate competition of global choral champions. The Philippine Madrigal Singers won over five other prizewinning European choirs at the Grand Prix European de Chant Choral Competition in Tours, France. Recently, the Madz won top prizes in the Certamenes Internacional Habaneras y Polifonia held in Torrevieja, Spain in 2004.

As Philippine ambassadors of culture and goodwill, the Madz have had the pleasure and privilege of giving command performances for royalty and heads of state. These include Pope Paul 6th, Presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon, King Juan Carlos de Bourbon and Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

The Madz have over 35 Philippine and international recordings.. Also published s the award-winning book A Life Shaped By Music that chronicles the life of Prof. Veneracion and the history of the Madz. Many of the Madz's original choral arrangements and compositions are also in publication.

This choral institution has produced more than 200 choral and vocal pedagogues from its ranks, actively and constantly shaping the local and international choral landscape. Madz alumni are much sought-after as singers, conductors, arrangers and music educators. Its corps of composers and musical arrangers continue to produce new compositions and choral settings of Philippine music, thus contributing to the global growth of choral literature.

As resident artists of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, outreach concerts have taken the Madz to far-flung areas seldom reached by most performing artists. Averaging two international concert tours per year, the Madz relentlessly engages in the promotion of Philippine music and the Filipino Artist globally.

Presently under the masterful leadership of Madz alumnus Mark Anthony A. Carpio, the Philippine Madrigal Singers continues to set new standards of excellence at a global level. Since their humble beginnings as a university-based chamber ensemble throughout their legendary rise as international choral champions, this 42-yearold cultural icon known as the Philippine Madrigal Singers has irreversibly cemented its stature as one of world’s best choirs for all time.
