Raneil Antonio Ibay
Framed Shots Camera Club recently went to Cebu to shoot the Sinulog Festival, the country’s biggest festival. It was a fun weekend of street dancing and paying homage to the Santo Niño.
The group was composed of Chito Cleofas, Noel Amata, Arnie Aranjuez, Rellie Lopez, Nick Olayao, Rose Razon, Edwin Loyola, Caloy Zamora, Willy Siy, Nowell Trinidad, Katherine Adriano, Gina Alcera, Michelle Baretto, Med Ferrer, Roselyn Roldan, Rosy Villasanta-Ibay, and yours truly.
With a fiery sun blazing away in the morning and rains drenching everyone in the afternoon and the night, we nevertheless braved the elements and produced an exciting collection of images of the Sinulog Festival. Of course, nothing beats the experience of being there amid all the celebration.
Fresh from winning the FPPF’s 2007 Camera Club of The Year for the 5th straight year, Framed Shots Camera Club then held an exhibit of the Sinulog Festival 2008 at The FPPF Chamber, Fort Bonifacio, Intramuros, Manila throughout the month of March. What we presented in the exhibit was just a small glimpse of the revelry, merriment, and the celebration of the Sinulog Festival. Pit Señor!
All images were printed on Lucky Paper with matte boards provided by Chie Zamora Frames and Photography.

"The Cowboy," "Darn Kids," and "All hands on stick" were chosen as January's winners. Congratulations to Edwin S. Loyola, Anupam Pal, and Morris Bennett Altman!
In the "very much late is at least a bit better than never" department, we're pleased to present the monthly winners of our Photo of the Day contest for January, 2007. It seems we're perpetually behind on the bread-and-butter work here, but that's no excuse for letting things get *this* far behind. We'll do better going forward, we promise!
At any rate, here's a look at the winners for January, and some thoughts from the judges on them:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First Place The Cowboy, by Edwin S. Loyola (Edwin won a Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Printer.) This photo drew the judges' eyes for its painterly qualities, and the feelings it conveys of loneliness and isolation in the face of an impending storm, and the welcome relief of safe shelter. Faith-oriented viewers will also find a powerful metaphor for the role of God and the provision offered through a community of believers. (The cross on the building indicates it's a church.) It's not clear (nor does it matter) how much of the lighting in this shot was found in the original scene, or how much was constructed in Photoshop, but the dark clouds and general heaviness on the right side of the picture nicely phrase the sense of foreboding, and provide emphasis for the shelter offered by the church building. The position and pose of the cowboy and his horse also works well: If they were already on the path and heading toward the church building, the image would still have evoked the sense of threat and shelter, but wouldn't have been as strong. As it is, the man and horse are clearly altering their path, from a heading that would lead them into the storm to one that leads to the shelter. The implication of an abrupt change in direction in response to the looming threat adds a level of urgency that otherwise would not be present. Finally, the sepia-toned rendering of the image adds to a sense of historicity, but also removes the possible distraction of color, letting the tonality of the image do its work unimpeded. A nice shot, and very well executed.

From : Paolo A. Dy Director | Cinematographer | Screenwriter Manila, Philippines
Hey guys!
My newest short film 'QWERTY' is finally on the website of the Steven Spielberg/Mark Burnett competition ON THE LOT.
http://films.thelot.com/films/19175
Please check it out and leave a review or rating :) The more views/discussions, the bigger the chance of the film getting into the main competition, so please comment away! :D
QWERTY is a suspense-thriller. A mentally-afflicted young man named Benny is accused of murdering Professor Chavez, his longtime benefactor. Chavez' lawyer, Dan Ortega, is called in to figure out what really happened. The answer lies in Benny's mad obsession with the professor's old typewriter, on which he types relentlessly, day and night.
I had a great production team and an absolutely fantastic cast including Michael Williams, Miguel Faustmann, Cathy Azanza, Arvin Trinidad, Altair Alonso, Boyd Tinio, and Irra Cenina.
And there's an AMAZING final scene that took the team days to set up :)
Thanks in advance for the support!! Please forward this to everyone :D
Cheers, Paolo
About On The Lot
ON THE LOT, executive-produced by Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg, will give aspiring filmmakers from around the world the chance to earn a $1-million development deal at DreamWorks.
Airing next spring on FOX, this unscripted series will feature a cast of 16 undiscovered filmmakers who will compete to win the support of the show's viewers, as their fate will be decided by a weekly audience vote.
The competition will air over two nights weekly, with a one-hour "Film Premiere" episode, followed the next night by a half-hour "Box Office" results show.
After a global search, applicants will be winnowed to a group of 16 talented filmmakers. These finalists will be brought to Hollywood, where they will be divided into teams and begin the journey toward their "big break."
Every week, the hopeful filmmakers will produce short films from a chosen genre, running the gamut from comedies to thrillers, personal dramas to romance, sci-fi to horror. They'll have access to the best resources the industry has to offer -- professional writers, cast and crew, and maybe even Hollywood celebrities.
After the teams have battled time frames, budgets and all the usual chaos that goes along with filmmaking, their films will debut and be critiqued in front of a live audience during the "Film Premiere" episode. Judges will include a high-ranking motion picture executive, a prominent film critic and a succession of well-respected guests, such as directors who are experts in the week's featured genre. But the filmmakers ultimately will be judged by the harshest critics of all … the public.
It will be FOX viewers whose votes determine which film should be left on the cutting-room floor. On the next night's "Box Office" results show, the director whose feature garners the fewest votes will be sent home.
The competition continues and directors are eliminated until only the most talented filmmaker is anointed the winner and heads to DreamWorks … ON THE LOT.

Lawyers acting for a photography enthusiast have claimed victory in an international copyright wrangle after his wildlife image was used on an overseas stamp without his consent. Keen wildlife photographer Mark Johnson won an undisclosed sum from the New York-based Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation (IGPC) after a dispute over the publication of his photograph of a rare snail. 'This was a David and Goliath case,' said Peter Harrison a lawyer from Leeds-based firm Walker Morris which was asked to represent Mark by his attorneys in North Carolina. The image appeared on a set of stamps issued on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, prompting lawyers to take action against IGPC, a stamp agency they claimed had designed and produced the series on behalf of the island without seeking Mark's permission. Though Mark is a US citizen, Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory. Mark's photograph depicts a pair of Florida Tree Snails, one of which had a 'normal', right-hand spiral shell while the other was 'sinistral' - displaying a left-hand spiral which experts consider rare. To find the two side-by-side is particular unusual. The picture was published as part of a series of stamps called the 'Molluscs of the Caribbean'. Announcing the copyright victory, Harrison added: 'Mark Johnson is one individual and IGPC is a global corporation. The case may seem small and light-hearted but it illustrates an important principle of international copyright law; that individuals have a right for their work to be protected.' We understand that in return for recognition of his copyright and his role as a photographer, Mark has now given his permission for the stamps to be produced and sold. Patrick Cantrill, who heads the intellectual property group at Walker Morris told AP that the British lawyers applied the Bern Convention, an agreement made between member countries to protect copyright on an international basis. At the time of writing AP had not received comment from IGPC on the case. 'We asked the IGPC to acknowledge Mark as the rightful owner of this rare and possibly unique image and to pay him a sum in settlement based on a royalty of all stamps sold. This they did,' continued Harrison. 'Our client is happy with the settlement and has given his permission for the image to be used by IGPC.' Mark, a former US Army major, is understood to have stumbled across the stamps by pure chance while staying in the Caribbean.

........................................................................... ABOUT FESTIMAGE....
Festimage is an event promoted by City Council of Chaves, a city located in the north of Portugal. In realizing Festimage, the Municipality of Chaves basically wishes to achieve two objectives: to divulge, among city residents and visitors, the art of photography and digital art and, in taking advantage of the communication facilities provided by the Internet, to include authors from the most diverse origins in this divulging initiative.
The works that are accepted in Festimage shall be divulged in various ways. For starters, the Internet, where they will remain online until the next edition of the event. Afterwards, the 50 works garnering the most votes on the part of users of the Festimage site shall be reproduced on paper and shall comprise a traditional exhibit, to be organized at the city's Cultural Center from 8 to 31 July 2006. At the same time, some of the finalists shall be enlarged to bigger formats and shall remain on display until the end of the summer, in a few streets and squares in the city’s historical center. Finally – and also during the summer months, at night – all the works that are accepted shall be on multimedia display in leisure areas of the city where all the most frequently visited sidewalk cafés and bars are found. The expected multiplicity of the authors' origins, as well as the multiplicity of the ways in which they will be shown, put on display and exhibited, will shape the festival’s image which the event designation advertises.
The only way to enter Festimage is via this web site. The photographers and creators of still digital art just have to register and send us one of their works. And the top 50 vote-getters, to be voted on by the jury – which will classify the 5 best works – will only have to re-send them in a larger format, so that they may be printed and enlarged.
For their part, visitors to the site who wish to take part in the voting to select the top 50 works will also only need to register.
